Creating Confident Smiles

Phase 1 Orthodontic Treatment or Early Interceptive Treatment

Two dental professionals in green scrubs attend to a child in a dental chair while monitoring a screen showing an enlarged image of teeth.

Timing

Typically starts when a child has a mix of baby and permanent teeth, around ages 6-10.

Goal

We address developing jaw issues like crossbites, severe crowding, or misaligned bites by creating space for permanent teeth to erupt correctly.

Benefits

Early intervention can minimize the need for more extensive orthodontic treatment later on by guiding proper jaw development and tooth alignment early on.

The importance of Phase 1 Treatment

We closely follow the growth and development of your child to ensure appropriate timing for orthodontic intervention. Interceptive (early or phase I) orthodontic treatment may begin as early as seven years of age and may involve expansion, crossbite correction, overjet (sometimes called overbite) correction, and intervention for initial signs of crowding. With appropriate timing and early treatment, interceptive orthodontic therapy facilitates guidance of eruption of permanent teeth (which may help avoid future surgery), appropriate growth of the jaws, and helps to alleviate future issues caused by malocclusion or poor dental alignment. We understand some children may be self-conscious due to poorly positioned, rotated, or crowded teeth. In some cases, early orthodontic treatment may help alleviate these issues. Never hesitate to ask if it is “time” for braces or Invisalign at your next visit. Our doctors are committed to providing a conservative and caring approach to address your family’s concerns, and there are no “silly questions!”
